Developing a visual strategy model of a city's climate change response - Climathon 2018 Proposal

Climathon consists of a series of 24 hour events. Each year they are held in cities around the world. The concept is that these events will encourage the development of new initiatives and startups.  These are focused on solving climate change issues that face the cities in which the events are being held, or more broadly that face cities world-wide. Parker Duignan Consulting is involved in Climathon 2018 and what we are planning to do is shown below.

A city's climate change response can be seen as a typical 'strategy problem'

A strategy problem has the following elements:

  • Doing strategy properly requires you to identify possible strategy elements, agree on them, model them, quickly communicate them, implement them, evaluate them, remodel them (and then undertake further iterations of this process).
  • There are currently major inefficiencies in many of the steps in how people normally 'do strategy'.
  • A central inefficiency is that people in different locations end up having to ‘reinvent the wheel’. You can be certain that when any strategy discussion is taking place regarding any topic anywhere in the world, it is being duplicated by 10s or even 100s of other groups at the same time. People have to endlessly reinvent the wheel in different settings around the globe because there is no accessible and standard format for capturing and sharing strategy.

Fixing the strategy problem

My mission is to fix the strategy problem and I am applying it in a range of areas, in this case I want to apply my methodology to a city’s response to climate change. (Info about me).

I have developed a standardized visual way of capturing and communicating strategy (DoView® visual strategy models).

Below is an example of a DoView® visual strategy model for the reconstruction of Christchurch following the earthquakes. I would like to develop a similar type of visual strategy model for a city’s response to climate change.

Once developed (and if it was progressively updated), such a strategy model could be used by cities all over the world. They would use it first, to spark their strategic planning in different climate change response areas. Second, they could use it to benchmark against their own strategies they have developed. Strategic benchmarking in this way would help them check that they have covered all of the key steps they need to be thinking about in planning for climate change.

I am planning to use Climathon 2018 to develop a proof of concept model of a city’s reponse to climate change which can then be shared globally. It maybe that as a result of this, resources could then be obtained to have this strategy model continually updated and used by cities throughout the world.

Example of a city-wide DoView® strategy model similar to the one proposed for development at Climathon

A DoView® visual strategy model consists of a multi-layered visual model developed according to a set of standards.

Below is an example of a DoView strategy model built for the reconstruction of Christchurch. This is indicative of the way a visual strategy model would be constructed for a city’s response to climate change although, obviously, the content would be focused on climate change response, not as in the example below, earthquake recovery.

Relationship to this 2018 Climathon’s themes for Wellington

Climathon 2018 for Wellington has several themes: what waste can become a resource; what does Wellington need in order to create a sustainable food network; and, how can we reduce air transport emissions.

Within my proposal, aspects of these themes would be modelled, although the visual strategy model would go well beyond that and model other aspects of climate change response, including sea level rise, energy usage etc.
